A sump pump handles clear groundwater to prevent basement flooding. A sewage ejector pump is built for raw sewage and solid waste from basement bathrooms, grinding it up if it is a grinder pump and pumping it toward the main sewer line. A standard sump pump should not be used for sewage.

How long does a sewer pump last?

With proper maintenance, a high-quality residential sewage ejector pump typically lasts between 7 and 10 years. Usage volume matters, and so does what goes down the drain. So-called flushable wipes and hygiene products wear out a pump motor well ahead of schedule.

Does my basement bathroom need a sewage pump?

If the basement fixtures sit below the elevation of the main sewer line leaving your home, yes. Gravity cannot carry waste uphill, so a pump basin is required to move it up to the sewer line.

Why does my pump run all the time?
